I’ve developed a sort of fascination with remote locations. My ideal day involves heading somewhere very few people go, taking it in, and photographing it. Places where there are no photos on Panoramio or Google Earth hold particular appeal with me. Yesterday I hopped on my bike and headed to Patapsco Valley State Park. The southern section of the park is mostly inaccessible, so this of course was where I decided to go. I rode down a set of small local farm roads before dumping my bike at the edge of the forest. I wandered in and walked down a path created by two treads from a vehicle of some kind. I figured this area must have been cleared out at one time, probably to install a natural gas pipeline that I observed.
I found another path which cut through tall reeds and found myself in the forest. Fortunately, the forest was easy to traverse. The ground was covered in a bed of soft ferns that reached almost halfway up my shin. The trees were tall, thin, and well separated. This was the type of forest you can see through for quite a distance. Finally, I emerged into my destination, a second glade. I hiked through much taller reeds this times, ones that scraped at my chest and did quite a number on my unprotected legs. Here’s the location:
Once there, I took some photos to create a cylindrical panorama of the scene for all of you to enjoy.
